Andy Jordan

Bio

Andy Jordan is a highly experienced Producer and Director. Most of his career has been spent in theatre (with his own production companies, and as a freelance) and in radio/audio (he was for eleven years a Senior Radio Drama Producer for the BBC), but he has also worked in television (having trained at the BBC), and in film. His experience has been wide-ranging, pioneering, highly praised and award-winning. He is the founder of Andy Jordan Productions Ltd (in April 2000), and prior to that of Bristol Express Theatre Company (Trust) Ltd (in 1978). The company’s first production was the world premiere of PICASSO’S WOMEN, a cycle of eight one woman plays about the women in Picasso’s life, a co-production with Assembly Theatre in Edinburgh where the season opened (in 2000), and then subsequently a co-production also with ATG for a national UK tour, which starred Jerry Hall, Toyah Willcox, Josie Lawrence, Gwen Taylor, Susannah York, Frances Tomelty and Cheri Lunghi, amongst others. The company specialises in producing new writing on an independent basis, including dramas, comedies and plays with music. Since 2000, the company has presented 52 productions, in London, Edinburgh, on tour in the UK, and overseas. He was also a founder of Firemountain Films & TV Ltd, with whom he developed numerous feature film projects. Prior to this he was a founder of Playfair Productions Ltd (created with the late TV producer Susi Hush, TV director Alan Bell and TV presenter James Bellini), one of the very first high-profile UK TV independents. Three of Andy’s theatre productions have been turned into feature films: 2GRAVES by Paul Sellar (released in November 2013), LIES HAVE BEEN TOLD: AN EVENING WITH ROBERT MAXWELL by Rod Beacham (currently being developed as a feature film by the legendary Hollywood producer Ed Pressman) and HUSH by Samantha Wright (released in 2013). Andy also produced a version of Peter Quilter’s Judy Garland play, in Edinburgh and Greenwich, LAST SONG OF THE NIGHTINGALE, starring Tracie Bennett, which then became END OF THE RAINBOW, and then became the Hollywood feature film JUDY starring Renee Zellweger. He has had a long-standing relationship with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which started in 1976, his graduation year. He has subsequently presented over 30 seasons of shows at the Festival, including in 2024, where the shows were: Lies Where It Falls, written and performed Ruairi Conaghan, directed by Patrick O’Kane (from Belfast, Northern Ireland); Sinatra: RAW and Sinatra & Me, written and performed by Richard Shelton (from Los Angeles, America), The Shroud Maker, written and directed by Ahmed Masoud, performed by Julia Tarnoky (from Palestine), Born in the USA (Leaving Vietnam), written and performed by Richard Vergette (from England). Andy is renowned for his work with new writing. He has commissioned, developed, and script-edited countless projects for TV, radio, theatre and film. He is well-known for either discovering, or helping to develop, literally hundreds of new writers, many of whom are now internationally recognised, including: Jimmy McGovern, creator of TV’s Cracker, The Lakes; Accused, Time; Jeremy Brock and Paul Unwin, the writer of the award-winning movie Mrs Brown and the co-creators of TV’s Casualty; Glenn Chandler, creator of TV’s Taggart; Allan Cubitt, creator, writer and director of TV’s The Fall; and playwright Richard Bean, author of the blockbuster comedy One Man, Two Guvnors. Numerous plays Andy has produced and/or directed have been published.
