Introducing the Migration Stories: Art as Activism Bursary

We’re thrilled to announce a new bursary initiative that supports producers who are passionate about using art to tell migration stories and drive activism.

Migration is a key issue in today’s world, and we believe art can play a powerful role in sharing these stories and inspiring change.

What’s the Bursary About?

The “Migration Stories: Art as Activism” Bursary offers financial support to producers whose work highlights migration issues and inspires action. You might be a producer who has migrated to the UK or work with artists, activists, and projects that are fostering a global conversation about migration.

We want to support producers in feeling resourced in their professional development and tackling a subject that impacts millions globally. This is for producers working in cross-art forms (theatre, live art, visual arts, dance) who are drawing on migration stories to impact cultural producing and mobilise communities.

The bursary provides three grants of £1000. Finding funding for professional development can be challenging for mid-career and independent producers. This bursary offers a chance to advance your practice, explore new ideas, and work on projects that can have a lasting impact on your career and community.

Outcomes

We hope this bursary will lead to the outcomes below and will use these as a criteria guide when assessing applications:

Empower Producers: Give you financial support and confidence to invest in yourself, pursue ambitious projects, take risks, and experiment.

Increase Awareness and Action: Support producers who are creating projects that focus on migration stories and activism, which will help raise public awareness and inspire tangible action.

Build Strong International Networks: Facilitate the creation of strong international networks among producers, artists, and activists, leading to ongoing collaborations and knowledge exchange.

Promote Sustainable Practices: Encourage producers to incorporate sustainable practices into their work, setting an example for others in the industry, such as well-being or other strategies to navigate this role.

Create Lasting Impact: Encourage producers to develop their practices to have an impact and ultimately create lasting change, influence policy, shape public opinion, and inspire future generations.

Bursary Details 🚀

What is the Offer?

£1000 x 3 Bursaries Available
- 1 bursary for a mid-career producer (3-10 years experience): Use it for training, new collaborations or mentoring to advance your practice.
- 1 bursary for a more experienced producer (10+ years experience): Plan a dream project, rethink your work, or take time to rest and reflect.
- 1 bursary for a producer of any level of experience from a marginalised and underrepresented background: Address systemic bias and under-representation in the arts.

The bursary is for £1000 per person and can be viewed as a lump sum. Recipients will receive the £1000 in one payment upon receipt of an invoice at the start of the period, which can last as long as they choose. We will ask recipients to write or record a short reflection on their bursary period.

How You Might Use the Bursary:

Access training courses and development opportunities abroad or in the UK
Travel/accommodation to international events
Cover mentoring time
Pay for overheads
Research or organising time with artists or activists
Put towards admin time to develop a project exploring migration
Or… anything else you need – tell us what this is!

How We Can Support You:

We’re happy to offer introductory sessions to those who need more information before applying. Please get in touch to request this
In addition to financial support, selected recipients will have access to 2 x mentorship and advisory sessions with Nassy Konan( Producer) from Producer Gathering and another producer with relevant experience
We will advise producers to participate in networking events where needed and connect bursary recipients, allowing them to meet online at the beginning of the process and have a closing reflection session.
We can also help arrange online meetings with potential collaborators, both locally and internationally.

Eligibility

Freelance producer – full-time, part-time, or trainee independent – but not in full-time education, based in England
Experience working in the context of migration as a producer, or working on projects that explore migration and/or activism as a key issue

Bursary Timeline

Deadline: 6 January
Review and Shortlist: 8th – 15th January

Assess applications against review criteria.

Shortlist candidates who meet the eligibility
Inform non-successful shortlist

Final Selection:

Assess the final 10 applications
Select 3 Bursary recipients

Public Announcement: 17th January
